The Others

Who are them? This is the question peolple ask themself. Many persons believe they're never existed, other people that they are vanished 8000 years ago and they will never come back. These creatures of the Great Stranger, R'hllor enemy, compares in the night, preceded by a paralizing and innatural cold.

They hate steel, fire and sun, and every creature with blood in veins, and ride pale non-dead horses or go by feet lightly, without neither pressing the snow pavement nor producing any noise. Tall, slim and hard, when they speak their unintellegible words, seems to hear ice breaking. They have white and skeleton-like hands, pale skin as milk and inhuman and deep blue eyes, burning as fire.

They wear brilliant armour, changing colour every step, white as snow or black as shadow , whereas their weapons are cristal swords, surronded by a spectral halo, a thin light vanishing in the edges, sharpened more than razors. When ordinary steel stikes an Other's blade, a very high vibration is produced, hardly audible by human ear and, moreover, steel begins to freeze until break in peaces.

To be killed by an Other is not the end, but means to become a dead man walking, that is a being marked with unnatural blue eyes (a colour that disappears when the creature in destroted), cold skin and white like milk but black hands likesigns of freezing. Even after several days the're dead, they don't decompose as an ordinary corpse. At the opposite of a normal corpses, every kind of animal get away from it: worms, insects and also dogs and horses.

Unexpectedly, although they seem dead corpses in the day, they can revive by night and, thogh clumsy and broken, they are strong enough to break a man's neck. Otherwise they can move silently, to open doors and to hunt some particular persons, letting guess that they keep rememberings from when they were alive.

To wound a dead man walking in a fight has the initial effect to produce a loathsome smell. To stop them seems impossible, since a cutted limb lives an own life, and a dead man walking will follow his aim in any case, continuing fighting even without head. An enemy for these monsters is fire, that destroys them quickly, burning them as dry wood and melting their skin like wax.

Besides fire exist another enemy fotr the Other god: obsidian (drake's glass). Dead mans walking don't fear it, but it is mortal for the white walkers, as the Others are called by brutes. In fact, every part of an Other body touched by drake's glass will beging to fume and melt until the Other becomes mush and disappears (shinig flesh and opaline bones) in the time of twenty heart's beats, leaving only a smoke thread. After the dead of the white walker, obsidian weapon will be completely freezed, but the pale blu blood of the other will vaporate at the firs contact.

In the opinion of some brutes Others are the cold gods of darkness and white shadows. So, when the white cold comes, they give them as sacrificeanimals, and even babies, that are leaved in the forest. Others, that together dead mans walking are believed to feel in a strongly way life of babies, take them and sometimes, some brutes tell, they send them to take others like them.

There are several legend ragrding Others. In one of them is telled the story of a time before the coming of Andals, or the story of the Long Night, of the Others and the last Hero who fighted them.. Others legends tells about brute women the after lyng down with white walkers gave birth to horrible half-men, or about huntings riding non-dead horses with packs of white spiders big as mastiffs, or about how they feed their non-dead servants with human flesh.

According to another legend Others eat human blood, as happened to a big and clever hero who after escaping from an evil giant was for too little time free, losing his life. Furthermore, in the ballad “in the end of the great night” is told the strike of the Night's Watch who rode aginst the Others during the Battle for the dawn.

You can also hear about a strange white lady, an Other or an Other's servant, who married the king of the Night inducing him to do sacrifices to the Other God until he was defeated. But among all this stories one is the most popular.

Tha one told to the babies before sleeping: “Be good, or the Other will ome and get you.”
