DORNE

PLACES ARE FROM NORTH TO SOUTH

Dorne is the southernmost land of Westeros and the less populated region of the Seven Kingdom (as Prince Doran Martell says). In the past it was conquered by Rhoynar led by the legendary warrior-queen Nymeria. Rhoynar were people that lived in a city upon Rhoyne river, in the Eastern Continent. Legends say that her army was mainly composed by women. Landed with a fleet of 10,000 ships to Dorne. Queen Nymeria married lord Mors Martell. With the help of wife’s army defeated rivals that want absolute power. He became first Prince of Dorne. Lords of the ruling House Martell still style themselves "Prince" and "Princess" in the Rhoynish fashion, besides, lands and title are inherited by the firstborn, both man or woman.

Rhoynar joined, during the centuries, authochtonal people, creating, in this way, three different groups of Dornishmen:

“Salty Dornishmen”, who live along the coasts, "Sandy Dornishmen", who dwell in deserts and in long river valleys, "Stony Dornishmen", whose dominions are the passes and the heights of the Red Mountains.

Among these three groups salty Dornishmen are the main heirs of Rhoyne, stony Dornishmen are the least ones. Salty Dornishmen are flexous and dark tanned, with smooth olive skin and long windswept black hair.Sandy Dornishmen are even darker, with their faces burned until they have turned brown by the hot Dornish sun. They wear helmets wrapped up in shining scarves to hedge from the sun. Stony Dornishmen are biggest and fairest; sons of the Andals and the First Men, they have brown or golden hair, and freckled faces or burned by the sun.

Dornish lands produce a sweet red wine, extracted from sour cherries, plums and rich dark oaks.

Dornishmen and men of the Reach never liked each other; their hostility was appeased by the admission of Dorne in the Seven Kingdoms, but it was rekindled since Oberyn Martell, Prince Doran's younger brother, lord of Sunspear, crippled Willas Tyrell, heir of Highgarden, during a joust.

BONEWAY

It’s the road that leads from Dorne to the Stormlands through Summerhall.

TOWER OF JOY

It is between dornish mountains. Lyanna took shelter there, during Robert’s rebellion, defended by three knights of Kingsguard, ser Gerold Hightower, “the White Bull”, the lord commander, ser Arthur Dayne, “the Sword of the Morning”, and ser Oswell Whent.

SUMMER SEA

Starfall is on the shores of this sea.

PALESTONE SWORD

It’s a Tower of Starfall. The name refers to the sword Dawn.

Ashara Dayne committed suicide by leaping from this tower.

STARFALL

Dayne’s castle, on the shores of Summer Sea.

VAITH AND GREEN BLOOD

They are the main rivers of Dorne and for this reason they are very important for the life of this region because of the dry climate. On the Green Blood live the descendants of Rhoynar, that call themselves "Orphans".

BROKEN ARM

Through it, First Men arrived in Westeros, before it was broken.

SUNSPEAR

It's the capital of Dorne and seat house of Prince Doran Martell; also called the Shadow City, it was erected with mud and straw buildings, and it's surrounded by the Winding Walls that, avoiding an entire roll of tortuous alleys, through the Threefold Gate bring to the Martell fortress, surrounded on three sides by the sea.

Travellers who enter the city are able to see three impressive towers: the Spear Tower, 150 feets tall, topped by a huge steel spear more than 30 feet long. In this tower Prince Doran confined Princess Arianne Martell after her failed effort to forcibly crown Myrcella Baratheon as Queen of the Seven Kingdoms and lead a rebellion against the Iron Throne. Behind it, there's the Tower of the Sun and its dome of gold and leaded glass. At the end, there's the Sandship, so called because of its shape: it appears in fact like a giant dromon that, once silt up, was covered by the sand until it hardened and turned to stone.

THE WATER GARDENS

Set only about three leagues away from the capital city, they are the favourite residence of Prince Doran Martell, who's gladden by its scents and the peace that reigns in this place. Built up with pink marble, they are the most luxurious place Dorne can offer. After Prince Oberyn's death, in the Water Gardens were lodged Ellaria Sand, the dead prince's concubine, and his younger daughters.
