House Martell
The Noble House of Martell descents from Nymeria, warrior queen of Rhoyne, in the eastern continent, who led to Dorne her ten thousand ships and her army, composed only by female warriors, and took Lord Mors Martell as husband. With her aid, he conquered the rest of Dorne, slaying all the other rivals.
The influence of rhoynian’s costumes is deep, in fact Dorne’s masters use to call themselves as Princes, instead of Kings, as in the rhoynian tradition, and also, as to the dornian tradition since then, the title and the lands of a lord passes to the eldest heir, male or female it is.
Dorne was the only kingdom of the western continent that was never conquered, not even by Aegon the dragon. For 200 years after the landing of Aegon and his sisters, Dorne remained independent, and the unification with the Seven Kingdoms came only with a marriage and a dealt, not by war.
Indeed, the peaceful king Daeron II Targaryen, marrying Princess Myriah of House Martell and giving his sister as wife to reigning Prince of Dorne, prevailed where, before him, all the other warrior kings failed.
Since then, the marriages between Houses Targaryen and Martell have been numberless.
The last example, the marriage between Princess Elia Martell, minor sister of Prince Doran, lord of Sunspear, and the iron throne’s heir, Prince Rhaegar Targaryen.
Martell’s emblem is a red sun drilled by a spear.
Their motto is “Unbowed, unbent, unbroken”.
