House Greyjoy
The Greyjoys from Pyke, located in Iron Islands, claim themselves as descendants of the Grey King’s of the Ages of Heroes. Legend says Grey King ruled not only western islands, but also seas themselves, and had a mermaid as wife.
For thousands of years, plunderers from Iron Islands, called “Ironmen”, were the dread of seas. They pushed on as far as Ibben and Summer Isles. They were proud of their own fierceness and freedom. Each Iron Island had its own “Salt King” and “Stone King”. The King of all the islands was chosen among them. This habit persisted till King Urron made throne heritable, exterminating all other contender, on occasion of a convocation for the choice of new king.
Urron’s descendance expired thousands of years later, in the age Andals conquered Iron Islands. Like all other former archipelago’s rulers, Greyjoys were joined in matrimony with the conquerors. Iron Kings extended their domains far beyond islands themselves, eroding kingdoms on the continent with iron and fire. However, during following centuries, descendants of King Qhored lost Arbor, Oldtown, Bear Island and much of the western shore. In despite of this, when war of conquest began, King Harren the Black ruled all the lands between the mountains, from the Neck to the Blackwater Rush.
When Harren and his sons died in the fall of Harrenhall, Aegon Targaryen allowed surviving Lords of Iron Islands to return to their ancient customs, choosing the king of all islands among them. Their choice was Lord Vickon Greyjoy of Pyke.
Balon Greyjoy, actual Lord of the isles, conducted a ribellion against Iron Throne, which was suffocated by King Robert Baratheon and Lord Eddard Stark.
The Greyjoys emblem is a golden kraken upon black field. Their motto is: “We do not saw!”.
